OpenAI released its brand new version of ChatGPT on March 14, 2023. ChatGPT 4 vs. 3.5 presents a major upgrade. You can see ChatGPT 4 in action by viewing OpenAI’s demo here.
In this post, we compare ChatGPT 4 and 3.5 to specifically look at the improvements made by OpenAI in ChatGPT 4 over its predecessor.
1. Size Matters: A Significant Upgrade in Model Capacity
The most apparent difference between ChatGPT 4 and its predecessor is the model capacity. ChatGPT 4 boasts an impressive 175 billion parameters, a considerable leap from ChatGPT 3.5’s 345 million parameters. This increase leads to better understanding and enhanced conversational capabilities in a laid-back manner.
2. Training Techniques: Fine-Tuning for Better Performance
Another notable change is in the training methods employed. ChatGPT 3.5 used Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF), while ChatGPT 4 incorporated the Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) algorithm for an even better performance. As a result, ChatGPT 4 can generate more coherent and contextually accurate responses, making it a more dependable conversational partner.
3. User Interaction: Aiming for a Human-Like Experience
ChatGPT 4 is designed to interact with users in a more human-like way. While ChatGPT 3.5 was already quite capable, its successor shows improved comprehension of complex queries and delivers smoother, more relevant responses. This enhancement highlights the steady progress of AI technology in mimicking human conversation.
4. Knowledge Retention: The Art of Absorbing Information
Both ChatGPT 3.5 and 4 are undeniably intelligent, but when it comes to retaining and applying knowledge, ChatGPT 4 has a clear edge. It effectively absorbs more information, which it then uses to provide more accurate, detailed, and knowledgeable answers. This makes it an invaluable resource for users seeking reliable information in a relaxed manner.
5. Content Creation: Fostering Creativity
In terms of content creation, both ChatGPT models exhibit remarkable creativity. However, ChatGPT 4’s larger size and improved training give it a slight advantage in generating more diverse and imaginative content. It serves as a dependable creative partner, ready to help craft anything from a well-written article to an engaging blog post (like this one!).
ChatGPT 3.5 Response Speed
There is one place that ChatGPT 3.5 currently outperforms ChatGPT 4, which is response speed, or the time it takes for ChatGPT to generate a response to a text prompt. The release of the ChatGPT 3.5 Turbo model was a major speed improvement, and it is now the default when using ChatGPT 3.5 for Plus subscribers. When using each side by side it is easy to see the difference in response speed. Now that the Turbo model is standard for Plus users, ChatGPT 3.5 is almost instantaneous for most prompts.
On the other hand, ChatGPT 4 takes significantly longer to respond, write out responses and even process prompt. This will change in the near future now that OpenAI has released ChatGPT 4. The company said it is focusing on the response speed of ChatGPT 4 in addition to finishing up the API for release and the new Photo prompt feature that will be coming soon.
Conclusion
In conclusion, ChatGPT 4 is a noteworthy advancement, featuring a substantial increase in size, enhanced training methods, and improved performance across most areas. While it may not be flawless, it showcases the ongoing progress of AI technology in approaching more human-like interactions in a casual yet professional way. We can certainly look forward to ChatGPT 5 with anticipation!
